Many of the twenty-five groves and packing houses that originally began at this time were still in operation even well into the 20^th century. The highest producing orange grove real estate of Davie by the 1940s covered more than 3,000 acres and by the next decade another 2,000 or so acres were added to that count. The total value of the citrus industry in the area at the time was over $5 million.

Prosperity like this from the agricultural real estate shouldn’t go unrewarded so some of the citrus farmers in the area decided to throw a celebration. Fruit stands were set up and a huge picnic was arranged along the C-11 Canal. With tourists paddling up the canal and travelling along the dirt roads to reach Davie, the celebrations began! This would eventually become the Orange Festival.

The Orange Blossom Festival now honors the Davie area with a parade full of fixings, an arts and crafts show and a professional rodeo. This is the longest running community event in the county. Along with the festival, the historical museum makes sure the agricultural real estate of the past isn’t forgotten.

The Old Davie School Historical Museum houses several pieces of agricultural equipment and artifacts as well as documents and photographs of the citrus heyday. The Citrus Packing House Museum is another great resource to peek into the past.

Davie

At the beginning of the 20^th century then Governor Napoleon Broward had the genius to dream up a plan to drain the Everglades and sell off blocks of real estate at two dollars a pop. The proceeds would fund the canal system in southern Florida.

With the water drained it was discovered that the region was littered with very fertile soil. People came by the droves to purchase here.

Millionaire R. P. Davie was one of these people. In 1906 he came and purchased over 27,000 acres. The irrigation and drainage canals were built. Despite nature’s best efforts of keeping them away, by 1909 permanent residents arrived from all over the country.

The planting of crops began. Vegetables were the first, along with orange groves and open range cattle roamed freely. Former Canal Zone workers organized “Zona” in 1912 and the real estate would be renamed Davie in 1916 and incorporated in 1926.
